Revenue issue warning: Latest Email Scam
[ 17/08/2010 ]

The Revenue Commissioners have become aware of another fraudulent email purporting to come from Revenue seeking personal information from taxpayers in connection with a tax refund. This phishing email is headed "Please Submit Your Payment Refund" and advises recipients that "Following an upgrade of our computer systems and review of our records we have investigated your payments and the latest tax returns over the last seven years our calculations show that you have made over payments of €172.25". A "Click here to claim your refund" opens up a form seeking personal information, including debit/credit card details, that is attached to the frameset of the www.revenue.ie website.

This email, which is the latest is a succession of scams targeting Irish taxpayers, did not issue from Revenue.

The Revenue Commissioners never send emails which require customers to send personal information via email or pop-up windows.

Anyone who receives an email purporting to be from Revenue and suspects it to be fraudulent or a scam should simply delete it. Anyone who is actually awaiting a tax refund should contact their local Revenue office to check its status.

Anyone who provided personal information in response to these fraudulent emails should contact their bank or credit card company immediately.
